Was it the nicest? I doubt it; there were probably more showy moves i had done before in my life
But this wasn't technique; it was pure will
And it started off with the best pass i had ever received before in my life from an ex NTU-school team who was at the starter level
he was floating around the 3 pt line near the middle and decided to take a shot
i cut to the basket; my mark realised a moment too late and followed half a second behind me
the ex NTU starter changed his decision in mid-air and threw a monster bullet pass to me at about 100km/hr or something. it was a thing of beauty; i yelled: NICE and jumped immediately; i had completely forgotten my bearings.
i was directly under the basket. (the right play would have been to take one extra step and reversed it in)
it was too late; i had alrdy jumped. I also knew my mark was jumping behind me; if i tried to fade backwards and bank it against the board he was in a perfect position to give me a monster rejection.
The pass was too good; i wasn't going to waste it by getting rejected. In that split second, i did the only thing that occurred to me. I banged the ball against the underside of the rim and got it again on the way down.
By this time, my mark had recovered and was right on top of me. I faked a shot; he wasnt biting. I had already decided; i'm not going to waste such an amazing pass; i was going to score it no matter what.
My next jump was a real one. I jumped and faded slightly at the same time to gain some space. My mark was nearly as tall and perhaps more athletic than me; he had been covering my shots all game and blocked a few as well. As expected, he was all over me again.
Not this time; i was giving this shot 100%.
I seized up all my core muscles to stay up in the air for even a split second more. In that moment, that one second felt like an eternity. But i started floating backwards from him while he was still straight up. We were both on the way down now.
There still wasn't enough space; i forced my body to go nearly horizontal in midair. It was the first time i had ever managed to do that; ever. But it worked, and i easily banked it against the board and it went in.
I fell to the ground, but it didn't hurt at all. Now i understand why all the nba guys end up on the floor after taking a tough hanging shot. It never hurts when you are ready for it; the only times falls hurt is when you don't see it coming.
But it was certainly the most amazing play of my life. Everything from the pass to the final shot. A story that happened in about 3-4 seconds.
